Revive Roles of Traditional Rulers to Check Insecurity-Ahmadu Bello Foundation

Mr. Abubakar Gambo, Managing Director, Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation (SABMF), said on Tuesday that reviving the roles of traditional rulers would contribute to fighting insecurity.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna, Gambo noted that traditional rulers played vital roles in securing their domains. He said the foundation had observed that the  recurring security challenges in some parts of the country, particularly in the north,  was as a result of missing link in addressing the menance. According to him, if the traditional rulers are given constitutional powers they had in the past, crimes and all other security challenges will be reduced. The Director explained that every traditional ruler had his method of institutionalized checks and balances to evaluate peace, unity and progress in his domain. “Traditional rulers are leaders who derive their powers, not from the constitution, but by our traditions, which are basically our norms, cultures and manners. ”These norms, cultures and manners are manifest in terms of obedience to elders and constituted authorities,” he said. Gambo also attributed some of the security challenges in the country to population explosion. He recalled that before now, traditional rulers and authorities easily identified strangers and traced them easily when they needed to do so.
