Ebonyi Guber Aspirant Extols PDP for Adopting Power Rotation, Zoning

From Victor Nwegede, Abakaliki

One of the 2023 frontline gubernatorial aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ebonyi State, Dr. Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh, has applauded the leadership of his party in the Southeast geopolitical region for having adopted zoning every elective position at all levels.

Recently, the South-East PDP working committee and stakeholders held a meeting at the Lion Building in Enugu and resolved that in the selection of candidates of the PDP in the zone for the 2023 elections, ‘the principle of zoning and rotation of power shall be adhered to, upheld and respected at all levels’ by the party in the region.

The resolution which was signed by the PDP National Vice Chairman in the South East Zone, Dr. Ali Odefa, and the Secretary, Chief James Ugwu, noted that “this is particularly important in all situations where, before now there had been entrenched the practice of zoning political elective offices.”

The South-East PDP noted that “for this purpose where the governor is a member of the PDP, the governor shall ensure compliance with this resolution while the zonal working committee shall in liaison with the leaders ensure compliance in the states.”

In the meeting attended by the South East notable leaders and stakeholders of the party, including Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Governor Victor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, Senator Sam Anyanwu among others upheld the power rotation and zoning in the forthcoming elections, after the in-depth analysis of the political development in contemporary Nigeria to guarantee best political practices founded in democratic norms and geared towards the attainment of a stable and progressive country.

Among the PDP resolutions were “that by the principles of inclusiveness, rotation and equity as stipulated in the preamble, aims and objectives (Article 7(1)(2)(3) of the Constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party (as amended in 2017) as well as relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party (as amended), the South-East zone of the Peoples Democratic Party hereby unanimously resolve that the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2023 General Elections should be zoned to the Southern part of Nigeria.”

The South-East zonal executives of the party commended the extraordinary political candor and courage of some members of the PDP from the Anambra State in the National Assembly and the State House of Assembly for having stood with the party during the 2021 gubernatorial election in their state.

The party pledged to work with the framework of the relevant rules for the selection of candidates to put their efforts in proper perspective, in addition to recommending them to its National Executive Committee, saying the lawmakers deserve a concessional treatment.

It also commended Governor Ugwuanya of Enugu State, his counterpart of Abia, Governor Ikpeazu and other key stakeholders and leaders of the party, for their exemplary leadership by ensuring the party remains an enviable brand name in the South East zone, as a veritable vehicle for the deliverance of democratic dividends.

However, Ezeh while appreciating his supporters, friends and wishers at his 50th birth anniversary, commended the South-East PDP family, and thanked the leaders of the party in the region for insisting zoning and equity must be maintained.

He said: “We cannot be asking for equity from Nigeria and do the opposite in our zone. It is my belief and indeed thesis that zoning allows each zone to present its best and not its worst. I represent both Equity and Merit in my quest and aspiration. I represent a movement of the people.

“Our People First Agenda for Ebonyi State resonates strongly. Zoning ensures that every group will ultimately have an opportunity to lead. To All Men of Goodwill, join me in the Recovery, Rebuilding and Restoration of Ebonyi State to the dreams of our Founding Fathers. I thank you for your beautiful birthday wishes.”

Ezeh had earlier disclosed that today he stepped into the golden era of the 50s, saying he did feel fulfilled, adding: “The positive remarks I am receiving from far and wide on my 50th birthday celebration are humbling and a reminder of the responsibilities I represent. I am ever willing to shoulder more.

“Indeed, I expected this Golden landmark with so much excitement…but then… politics took all the plans away! It’s all part of the sacrifice.

“Stepping out to join politics as a Gubernatorial Aspirant is already an encouragement to many others who are in their 40s and 50s to step forward.  This is our first win… we cannot continue to recycle those who have become irreconcilable in their selfishness!

“We need a generation with a soft foot in the past, a strong foot in the present and stronger hope in building a future for our generation unborn.  This is the generation I represent.  This project is yours, – the young, old and young at heart.

“At the golden mark of 50, we have the cultural upbringing that recognizes respect for our elders, our culture and our destiny. We have the awareness of the speed of things now, the magic of ICT and the power of digital platforms, new media and the impact of a connected global economy. We have also travelled the world and are not intimidated by anything or anyone. We can stand tall anywhere, any day. At this age, we appreciate where the world is headed and is ready to help nurture the future. At this age, we are prepared for Leadership.

“Some 30 years ago…we were told we are the leaders of today…today is here and we must take this opportunity with both hands. Today is possible because our forefathers, our father, and those of the older generation fought for it. Let us, the bridge generation lead the fight for those we must hand over to.

“I praise those Elders and Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen many of whom have continued to encourage the younger generation to step forward into political and organizational leadership positions.  May your days be Golden…we shall never forget your efforts.

“And to the few elders who are yet to muster enough confidence in the younger generation, we hope and pray they eventually do so while they gradually take the seat of statesmanship.
