Catholic Church Expresses Concern Over Vote Buying During Party Primaries

The Director, Social Communication, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Mike Umoh, has expressed concern over alleged vote buying during political parties primaries.

Umoh described the situation was worrisome and posed great danger to the future of the country.

He spoke with newsmen on Sunday in Abuja after a service to mark the World Communications Day, with the theme: “Growing Media Literacy for Discipleship”.

The director said that efforts should be made to discourage politicians from playing money politics with its attendant negative effect on the future of the country.

“What is going on at the moment with the primaries is disheartening.

“The signs we have seen with the primaries still point to the fact that we are not listening, our politicians are not listening to the people.

“Our politicians keep running to themselves and dancing to their drums and not to the people.

“The development is worrisome and I just hope and pray that even if politicians refuse to listen to themselves, people themselves will try to listen to their own song and do the right thing,” he added.

According to him, the way out is for the electorate to resist the temptation of playing bread and N1,000 politics.

Umoh said since the delegates had chosen to select those who gave them more money, the electorate should vote for those who would tackle the situation of the country to make it a better nation.
