My People Deserve Better Representation– Elum, PDP House of Assembly Candidate for Onicha East State Constituency

Barrister Wisdom Elum is the 2023 PDP Candidate for the Onicha East Constituency in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly. Elum, an Abuja-Based Legal practitioner and human rights activist in an interview with the TRUE VISION CORRESPONDENT in Abakaliki, VICTOR Nwegede, expressed optimism that with the invaluable dispositions of the PDP candidates, his party would defeat its rivals at the 2023 polls in his state, among other things.

Why do you decide to throw your hat into the ring ahead of the 2023 general elections?
The first driving motive for me to join the race is the desire to ensure that my people of Onicha East State Constituency of Ebonyi State, deserves quality and effective representation at the State House of Assembly, Abakaliki. We can no longer afford to sit by the side and watch things go from bad to worse. Our people deserve better representation. One of the key duties of a lawmaker whether at the local, state or federal level is to be the mouthpiece of his constituents. He is to pass the demands and expectations of his people to the relevant authorities. It is also his duty to ensure that amenities meant for his constituents gets to them in a timely manner. The lawmaker is also expected to liaise with other lawmakers to ensure that the other two arms of government deliver on good governance and work in the overall interest of the local council, State and the entire country as the case maybe. So for me, like I said earlier, we have watched from the sidelines for long. It is time to change the narrative for the better. Our people of Onicha East and the entire Ebonyi State deserves a better deal. Going forward, the story is set to change and the state will have cause to smile again.
How equipped and ready are you for this challenge you are setting for yourself?
I am well equipped for the task I set for myself. I did not wake up and decided to join the race for Ebonyi House of assembly. I made wide consultations across all the critical stakeholders in Onicha East from the youths, women Leaders, traditional and religious leaders. The result of the consultations encouraged me to step forward to offer myself to seek to represent my people. The wide acceptance led to my picking the ticket to be the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Onicha East State Constituency. I also need not overemphasize that law-making is a serious business and my years of practice as a servant in the temple of justice have prepared me for the job ahead. Without sounding immodest, my antecedents speak for me. I am known for my competence, credibility, straight forward and being good in whatsoever I do. So, I am equipped to the job ahead.
What Specific programme do you have for the people you are aspiring to represent?
The first programme I owe my constituents is effective representation. I am going to Abakaliki to give them a voice. The people of Onicha East would be heard this time around. The dividends of democracy due to them will reach them this time around. Secondly, I will team up with liked minded legislators in the House to come up with quality laws for the overall development of our dear state. I will champion all legislative functions that will lead to job creation, improved security and overall good governance of the state. Coming back home, I am going to initiate youth empowerment skills. I mean real skills and not Okada riding and the stuff. My emphasis will be on ICT. That is the way the world is going now. I will work to position our youths to have quality education so that they can go and conquer the world. The women will not be forgotten too. I will design empowerment programmes that will empower our women including widows and the aged. In all these efforts, I am going to ensure that Onicha East gets its fair share of infrastructural development. This is to ensure ease of evacuation of agricultural produce from the area.
Do you think that with the present government in control of Ebonyi State, you and your party will win any elective position in the 2023 general elections?
Our party, the PDP is coasting home to resounding victory come 2023 general elections. You can take it to the bank. Mark my words, I, as a PDP candidate and my party will win convincingly in the coming elections. We are coming to change the Change. So my response to your question is Capital YES. Other political parties in the contest are aware that PDP will coast home to victory. Do not forget that aside from the fact that PDP is a well-known political party, even though the opposition party presently, has done well to nominate candidates with competency and credibility in various positions.
What will be your plan to guarantee victory at the polls?
Our plan lies in our programmes and policies for the state come 2023. The PDP in Ebonyi State has a capable flag bearer in the person of Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, We have no doubt that Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii has all it takes to lead the charge for PDP victory in the 2023 general elections. At our various State and federal constituencies, our party is lining up men and women of integrity, experience to take over the reins of leadership next year. All PDP candidates are not only popular but also emerged from popular choice by the people. Our plan for the people of Ebonyi will give us victory at the polls. The people cannot wait to vote PDP into power. Ebonyi State in general and Onicha East Constituency, in particular, shall be great and smile again.
