YOWICAN Flag Off Sensitization Campaign

The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), Abia State Chapter, has flagged off massive sensitization programme aimed at creating political awareness among the populace.
YOWICAN also stated that the sensitization programme will also help to put to an end, the enthronement of incompetent individuals as leaders across the three tiers of government in the country.
Chairman of the Chapter, Uche Ogbuka, disclosed in an interview with newsmen in Aba, that the move was informed by the fact that the growing lack of interest and nonparticipation of citizens in electoral processes, was responsible for the emergence of low quality leaders in the country.
He expressed concern on the current lethargic situation, stressing that YOWICAN, was raising political consciousness among citizens to avert the mistakes of the past.
“There is need for us, even as a religious organization, to be involved in the political awareness creation because, everyone has felt the pains of bad governance so, should join hands to change things.
“In most cases, our elections are marred by low voter turnout and at the end, desperate politicians who have nothing to offer would have their way.
“In other cases, attempts are made to alter results by influencing the votes cast, that is the reason we are engaging the citizens to see why a lot of things have to change”, Ogbuka said.
The CAN Youth leader, said that religious bodies have roles to play in improving governance in Nigeria through condemning acts of corruption in government, and helping to create a functioning system.
He said the country was in dire need of good governance at all levels, adding that insecurity, unemployment, inflation, poverty, corruption, and infrastructural deficit were indicators of bad governance in Nigeria.
“We are raising consciousness to support leaders that would address these problems”, he said.
